Our Story
Our story starts with a spark.
In 1989, childhood friends Mark Talucci and Todd Elliott set out to travel the world on a mission to find something more meaningful than their mundane corporate careers. 
Between Bali and their hometown of San Francisco, a vision was formed to bring that spirit and craftsmanship home by way of a simple natural rattan and leather bag fashioned out of an everyday Balinese sleeping mat. Soon, we grew from that single style to a brand with national reach, selling through the nation’s largest retailers.

Our Signature
The Loop, our signature design mark, is shorthand for our brand. It’s based on the Bali Knot, the original symbol that we launched our brand with 30 years ago. It’s steeped in the same meaning and representation, acting as a symbol of our craft, connectivity and three brand pillars: people, planet, product.
It features a woven pattern, connecting our products to our global artisans. Its closed, connected line stands for our re-commitment to creating a more sustainable and ethical world.

In the 1990s, one Vogue ad changed everything for The Sak. The striking image of our Sak Lady—confident, effortless, unmistakably cool—captured something that resonated far beyond the pages of the magazine. More than just an advertisement, it put our brand on the map and defined who we are. The response was so overwhelming, we trademarked the image and made the Sak Lady the heart of our brand identity for years to come.
In the image, she’s holding our bestselling 120 Hobo, a bag we still make today, whose soft, slouchy shape stood out beautifully in an era dominated by structured handbags. And even now, some 30 years later, she represents the spirit of every woman who carries our bags: bold, authentic, and unapologetically herself.
