How It All Started
Some of the best ideas come from simply needing a better way to do something—like sitting down after a long day in the wild.

Back in the '80s, our founder Rob Hart was deep in the Colorado backcountry, leading a crew of Outward Bound students through some seriously stormy weather. After enough soggy nights and sore backs, he had a thought: Why are we still sitting on rocks and logs like it's the Stone Age?

Motivated by a serious need for comfort, Rob and his partner Louise Chandler started tinkering. A few sketches, lots of trial and error, and plenty of spilled coffee later—the first Original Chair was born.
Building a Better Sit
By 1987, word had gotten out. The sewing machines fired up, Crazy Creek was officially in business, and “The Chair” started popping up in gear bags all over the country.

As we grew, so did our team, our designs, and our obsession with getting every little detail right. From the stitching to the support stays, we built gear that held up to the wild—and to whatever you threw at it.

Over time, our chairs became go-tos for guides, thru-hikers, paddlers, and park dads alike. We didn’t just make a new kind of camp chair—we started a movement in portable comfort. And we’re still kicking back to this day.
Our tagline pretty much says it all: Perfecting “Just sit there” since 1987.
